New Business:
Cary Belyea recapped the 2007 swim season at the Evendale Pool.
- great summer overall
- the experienced staff proved invaluable including three instances in the water that were adverted before they reached crisis status
- Evendale lifeguard team placed second in the relay and fifth overall in the lifeguard challenge
- cleanliness improved; the bathhouse painting, flooring, and additions of the funbrellas, grills and games were well received
- currently working on closing up the facility and winterizing the pool
- spring will bring the painting of the pool and slide exterior
- information on pool health issues will be available next year for the members
- the lifeguards asked for more hands-on training next year
- Commission asked about diving classes, and three lifeguards said they would be glad to teach the class
Cary was asked if the swim season dates and hours were ok; he said yes. The dates and hours have been worked out over the years, so the pool is open evenings before school gets out, and when school starts up in the fall; in between, times work well for staffing.
The placement of the funbrellas was very good; commission members wondered if maybe a third funbrella should be added in the grass area.
This year’s caulking project helped minimize our water loss problem. Next season, the focus will be on checking the underwater lights for leaks.
Rick Hasler and Stephanie Zelvy, Tri-Health Fitness Management
- Welcome to Stephanie Zelvy the new manager of the Evendale Fitness Center. She was part of the original fitness center team when the renovated facility opened. (Kathy is back on Monday evenings only)
- 2nd Quarter’s Incentive program, The Evendale 100, was completed by 60% of the participants. Resident member, Hugh McKinnon completed the 100 miles in just 5 days. The participants exercised for a total of 7,555 miles.
- 3rd Quarter incentive program is the Football Challenge where teams of four compete to see who exercises the most. Three of the seventeen offered fall fitness classes were cancelled.
- 4th Quarter events will include The Great American Smoke Out day program and a holiday incentive program; member files will be cleaned up; kids (1st-8th grades) fitness classes during the holiday break; looking into increasing the number of massage participants, and availability of a larger seat for the PreCor bike.
Village Master Plan
- a trail system remains a request by many residents
- there were a number of issues within the village; but very few concerned the recreation department
- many respondents to the survey are thrilled with the recreation center and view us as an asset to the community
- a respondent stated our “eligible family member” has become too broad and should be returned to residents only. Some programs could not take place without resident’s grandchildren/nephews/nieces being involved; plus our residents enjoy watching their grandchildren/nephews/nieces involved in our programs.
Old Business:
Tri-Health Report – as noted in the packet
Director’s Report:
- A Cultural Arts Commission was formed to investigate the possibility of using the Civic Center for art, music, and other cultural events. Council has set aside funds to assist them. The commission will be exploring a few programs, looking for participants, best hours to hold classes, etc. Commission discussed various venues where classes could be held to help develop the programs if monies are not set aside to renovate the Civic Center.
- The 2008 Recreation budget has been submitted; hopefully, council will approve the final village budget at their December meeting. Recreation’s “big ticket” item in 2008 will be the playground renovation.
- 2008 Business membership brochure has been completed. Individual membership fees will increase $25; family memberships will increase $50. Facility and fitness will now have 90 memberships available. Current business fitness and facility members will be invited to renew their membership when resident members begin to renew on December 10th.
Phi Lambda Pi:
- Reviewing the information contained in the commission packet, it was a busy month for the teens.
- Children of commission members reported they had a good time at this year’s Rock the Dale Concert. The shortened time seemed to work better.
Open Discussion:
- After many discussions with SAY Soccer, our U-8 soccer teams will not be participating in the tournament; therefore, Kristen has arranged for a fun-and-game day similar to our U-6 fun-and-game day.
- Tennis Program/Courts: many compliments received this year about new instructor, Julie Klauck – she is a great motivator, people felt they learned more this year; the net on Court #3 needs attention; the sprinklers that were hitting the courts have been adjusted; a few puddles still occur, but they are in the corner of the courts
- Dog Day at the Pool was another success. One large dog session and one small dog session worked well.
- October’s meeting will be Thursday, October 25th at 7:30am.
Motion to adjourn made at 8:45am by Gus Janszen; seconded by Doug Lohmeier. Motion approved
